What is the message of this source? Explain your answer.
Source G : An extract of a speech by a British Member of Parliament to British political leaders.
It may be surprising to many to learn that little has changed since the early beginnings of Lagan College (the first integrated school*). Back then, pioneering and risk-taking parents brought that school into existence and today the same pioneering and risk-taking parents are taking forward initiatives to establish integrated schooling for their children. In 1981, the government denied any funding to this newly established school, and here we are again in 2006, with a different government denying another four schools the right to exist with government funding in their community.
Despite the positive results shown by integrated education, it is disappointing that the government have remained largely neutral on the subject. I asked a young student as he was about to finish his integrated school education what, apart from the great education he had received, was the biggest lesson he took away. He replied: "I learnt to celebrate other people's cultures, not fear them".
*A school where both Catholics and Protestants study in.

The source tells me that the government do not wish to give fund to the integrated schools. This can be supported by the following lines in source G,"the government denied any funding to this newly established school, and... with a different government denying another four schools the right to exist with government funding in their community."
The message of the source is for the British political leaders to know that the government is not giving any funds to the integrated schools despite positive results shown by integrated education.
The message of this source is that the British government does not support the idea of having an integrated school where both Catholic and Protestant students can study in together. This can be supported by the following line in source G, "In 1981, the government denied any funding to this newly established school, and here we are again in 2006, with a different government denying another four schools the right to exist".
ReplyDeleteAnother message of the source is that the integrated schools have produced results despite the absence of support from the government. This can be supported by the following line in source G, "Despite the positive results shown by integrated education, it is disappointing that the government have remained largely neutral on the subject".
The purpose of this source is to encourage the political leaders to change their mindset on the idea of integrated schools and to support them as it brings positive results and impact on the younger generation of British students.

ReplyDeleteThis source is telling us that although the British government had tried to solve the problem between Catholics and Protestants, he still remain neutral on the subject but the way he think out of had indeed solve some problem. The source says "it is disappointing that the government have remained largely neutral on the subject" tell me that the people feel it is not enough to solve the problem just letting protestants and catholics reading the same school, they feel that this cannot solve anything. But the following line, "i learnt to celebrate other people's cultures, not fear them" tells me that this has solve some problems as the children had learnt to become friend with their opposite race. In the school, only students which are children involve in the way to solve the problem between catholics and protestants. Adults do not go to school so they do not involve in this. This means that although the chidren do not hate each other, the adults are still hating each other, so this problem can only be solved at next generation. This shows that the plan came out by the government is not perfect and it has a big problem as it only solve the problem between children and not adults, so the message of this source is the plan which the government came out was not perfect and is almost useless as the problem can only be solve during next generation and not soon.
The source is trying to tell us that the Protestants did not recieved any favouritism from the British government because of the 5 well-established schools which can be seen from this sentence "the government denied any funding to this newly established school". People thought that this schools can be established because behind it, the British government is secretly funding the schools to make it a success. Parents are dragged because the British government want to divert their attention and give excuses saying that it is the parents who made the schools because of their ability to risk-take. However, although the denial, the teachers are able to educate the students well by teaching them to live in harmony and accommodate with one's culture and beliefs so as to prevent misunderstandings and conflicts. They wanted the end result to be the Protestants and Catholics to be peaceful.
