What does this source tell you about the Sri Lankan government’s attitude towards the Tamils? Explain your answer.

Source E:  An adaptation on the history between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil population from the LTTE website.
Sinhala state repression against the Tamils manifested in concrete forms following the island’s independence in 1948. Systematically, state oppression affected the Tamils’ economic and social lives. State-aided aggressive colonization in Tamil areas deprived the Tamils’ rights over their historical lands and altered the ethnic composition of the population rendering them a minority in traditional Tamil regions. These indicated an obvious plan calculated to destroy the Tamils’ national identity.

The Tamil leadership initially organized non-violent campaigns demanding justice from Sinhala rulers. Massive demonstrations by the Tamils symbolized a national uprising against the state. The Sinhala Government reacted with military violence and terror, brutally crushing these non-violent peaceful campaigns. Such oppressive tactics made the people realize the futility of non-violent campaigns.

  1. This source tells me that the Sri Lankan government’s attitude towards the Tamils is very ignorant. it is seen from, "The Tamil leadership initially organized non-violent campaigns demanding justice from Sinhala rulers...The Sinhala Government reacted with military violence and terror, brutally crushing these non-violent campaigns. Such oppressive tactics made the people realize the futility of non- violent campaigns" this meant that the Tamils put much effort in convincing the Sinhalese that they wanted peace for the Tamils in a way that was not violent but the Sinhalese just rejected it with the use of violence, without sparing a thought for the Tamils.

Next, the Sri Lankan's Government attitude toward the Tamils is not sparing a thought for them. As stated, "State-aided aggressive colonization in Tamil areas deprived the Tamils’ rights over their historical lands and altered the ethnic composition of the population rendering them a minority in traditional Tamil regions. These indicated an obvious plan calculated to destroy the Tamils’ national identity. " this proved that the Sinhalese purposely did all these to cause disruption in the Tamil areas. Since they never cared for the Tamils, they wanted to be the ruling party and let the Tamils feel inferior to them.

Therefore, the Sri Lankan Government's attitude towards the Tamils are very bad due to a lack of care and concern.

  2. The source tells me that the Sinhalese's government treated the tamils badly and being biased to them. From " Systematically, state oppression affected the Tamils’ economic and social lives. State-aided aggressive colonization in Tamil areas deprived the Tamils’ rights over their historical lands and altered the ethnic composition of the population rendering them a minority in traditional Tamil regions." can be seen that the Sinhalese's government were trying to destroyed the Tamils' national identity as by doing all those, they are driving the Tamils to a dead end. Hence, there would be no Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Also the source tells me that the Sinhalese's goverment were being unreasonable towards the Tamils. From " The Sinhala Government reacted with military violence and terror, brutally crushing these non-violent peaceful campaigns. " can be seen that although the Tamils organised non-violent campaigns demanding for their rights, the Sinhala government used violence on them instead of settling the problems peacefully.

The purpose of this source written by the LTTE is trying to tell us that the Sri Lankan's government had treated the Tamils badly as they were trying to destroyed the Tamils' national identity and also used violence on them.

This source tells me about the Sri Lankan government’s dislike the Tamil and do not care about the Tamil. This can be support by "State-aided aggressive colonization in Tamil areas deprived the Tamils’ rights over their historical lands and altered the ethnic composition of the population rendering them a minority in traditional Tamil regions." and "Massive demonstrations by the Tamils symbolized a national uprising against the state. The Sinhala Government reacted with military violence and terror, brutally crushing these non-violent peaceful campaigns." This mean that the government really dislike and do not care about the Tamil as the government use force which will result in many people dead and even destroy the national identity of the Tamil.

This source tells me that the Sri Lanka government treated the Tamils badly in their country. This can be supported by the line 'state oppression affected the Tamils’ economic and social lives. ' This tells me that the Sri Lanka Government treated the Tamils so harshly that they cannot live their lives properly. As stated in the source, their lives are being affected economically and socially. Hence, by treating the Tamils badly, the Sri Lanka government is forcing them to their dead end.

The sourse also tells me that The Sri Lanka government use violence against the Tamils. This can be supported by, ' The Sinhala Government reacted with military violence and terror, brutally crushing these non-violent peaceful campaigns. Such oppressive tactics made the people realize the futility of non-violent campaigns. ' This can be seen that the Sri Lanka government uses violence to scare away the tamils when they wanted a free state of their own. This shows that the Sri Lanka government doesn't want the tamils to have their own free state and were biased to them. They also use force to brutally end the tamils campaigns.

The purpose of this source is the encourage the viewers to oppose Sri Lanka's ruling over the tamils as they treated the tamils badly. In addition, this source expresses unhappiness and opposition towards to the Sri lanka government as The LTTE were treated cruelly.

Source E tells me that the Sri Lankan government’s attitude towards the Tamils were horrible and brutal. This can be supported by the line 'state oppression affected the Tamils’ economic and social lives'. It means that the state destorys the Tamil people's livelihood by depriving them of their rights. The Tamils are therefore not able to live normally without a sustainble economy. More evidence can be glimsped in the line, 'aggressive colonization in Tamil areas deprived the Tamils’ rights over their historical lands'. Therefore the Sri Lankan Government is trying to destory the Tamil's National Identity and eliminate the race as a whole.

Source E also tells me that the Sri Lankan Government does not tolerate any Separatism in the country. This can supported by the following line, 'Massive demonstrations by the Tamils symbolized a national uprising against the state.', and 'reacted with military violence and terror, brutally crushing these non-violent peaceful campaigns.' It means that when the Tamils held rallys demanding for a seperate state without violence, the Government retaliated with violence, and destoryed all campaigns. I can conclude that the Government does not value the Tamil's opinion and are brutally supressing it.

The purpose of this source is to convince the Tamils that the Sri Lankan Government is a evil one, bent on eliminating the Tamils from Social, Political, and Economic Life in Sri Lanka. It is also trying to show the 'sensible' reasons behind the creation of the LTTE. This can be seen in the line, 'brutally crushing these non-violent peaceful campaigns. Such oppressive tactics made the people realize the futility of non-violent campaigns.' It means that the LTTE realised that peaceful means has been tried before, and it won't work. The source also expresses unhappiness with Sinhala rule.

This source tells me that the Sri Lankan government treats the tamils and very badly. From " Systematically, state oppression affected the Tamils’ economic and social lives. State-aided aggressive colonization in Tamil areas deprived the Tamils’ rights over their historical lands and altered the ethnic composition of the population rendering them a minority in traditional Tamil regions." you can tell that the sinhalese government is trying to drive the tamils out of their country.

This source also tells me that the Sri Lankan government’s attitude towards the Tamils is very violent. it is seen from, "The Tamil leadership initially organized non-violent campaigns demanding justice from Sinhala rulers...The Sinhala Government reacted with military violence and terror, brutally crushing these non-violent campaigns. Such oppressive tactics made the people realize the futility of non- violent campaigns" this tells me that the tamils tried to use peaceful methods to solve the problem with the sinhalese but they just refused and used violence instead.

I believe the source tells me that the Sri Lankan Government was being unfair towards the Tamils. The Tamils were treated unjustly as they were oppreseed and had most of their rights removed. They were also being denied of recognition by the Government. ( Evidence:"State-aided aggressive colonization in Tamil areas deprived the Tamils’ rights over their historical lands and altered the ethnic composition of the population rendering them a minority in traditional Tamil regions.") This clearly shows the the Government was being against the Tamils as they treated differently and that they were oppressed.

Another point mentioned is that the Sri Lanlan took actions with the usage of violent as they confront the peaceful campaigns held by the Tamils who are opposing the Government by voicing out their dissatisfaction regarding the unequal treatment. This again shows the unfairness of the Sri Lankan Government as they reacted with violence.(Evidence:"The Tamil leadership initially organized non-violent campaigns demanding justice from Sinhala rulers." and "The Sinhala Government reacted with military violence and terror, brutally crushing these non-violent peaceful campaigns."

  11. To a large extent, i think that the Sri Lankan Government was not very far towards the Tamils then the Sri Lankan. It would be not fair to the Tamils . From what i know , the Tamils were very angry and decided to oppose the Sri Lankan government. Therefore, the Tamils created a terroist group know as (LTTE) . They were to get to street and killed those who supported the Sri Lankan even is Tamil who supported the Sri Lankan would be got killed now .
Sri Lankan took actions for the (LTTE) but they just ignored the government and continue their brutal actions and they would just continue till they got their own personal rights and freedom . . .

  12. This source tells me that the Sri Lankan government treated the tamils very badly and they do not respect the tamils.Which can be seen in source E which says,"State-aided aggressive colonization in Tamil areas deprived the Tamils’ rights over their historical lands and altered the ethnic composition of the population rendering them a minority in traditional Tamil regions."This meant that the Sri Lankan government has no
respect to the tamils and wants to chase away the tamils from their country.

This source also tells me that the Sri Lankan government did not even bother to consider what the tamils. This can been seen in source E which says,"The Sinhala Government reacted with military violence and terror, brutally crushing these non-violent peaceful campaigns."This meant that the tamils actually did want to talk to the government peacefully but the government did not want to settle the problems, instead they use violent and terror on the tamils to stop the tamils from demanding what they want.

The purpose of this source is to encourage the tamils to not support the government and let them know the how government had treated them so badly.
